Sourav bows out

Calcutta: Defending champion Aditya Mehta will meet Yasin Merchant in the quarter finals of the Kolkata Open National Invitation Championship, being played at the Hindusthan Club, here, on Saturday.

Kamal Chawla will cross swords with Siddharth Parikh, in the first of the last-eight matches.

On Friday, there was a major upset as Sourav Kothari of ONGC couldn’t make it through to the quarter finals. He finished third in Group D after losing to Alok Kumar 1-3 in a tightly-contested last league match. Alok won the first frame and took initial lead, but Sourav countered the same by winning the next frame to level again.

In the third frame, both the players gave plenty of chances, but it was Alok who had the last laugh when Sourav missed an easy brown pot. In need of brown, blue and pink, Alok accomplished the task successfully and gained a 2-1 lead. In the fourth frame, Alok made a fantastic break of 83 points to spoil the mood.

In Group B, Mumbai cueist Siddharth entered the quarters in dramatic style.

There was a three-way tie between Dharminder Lilly, Shivam Arora and Siddharth as all three players had two wins each. Manan Chandra, who had already made the grade, beat Shivam 3-0 and, on the basis of points average, Siddharth made the cut.

On Thursday, Mehta posted 115 points clearance in the opening frame against Laxman Rawat in the evening.

He continued with his form in next two frames as well and made it 3-0 win over Rawat.

Rawat had come close to make it 1-1 in the second frame, but missed the crucial blue and Aditya closed the proceedings by winning that frame 72-61 before wrapping it up by winning the third 70-24.
