Three die as car falls into Teesta

Gangtok, Dec. 19: Three persons were killed when the car they were travelling in skidded off NH31A and plunged almost 300ft below into the Teesta river near Rangpo in East Sikkim this morning.

The accident took place around 6am as the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp turn near the main gate of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology.

The car was travelling to Bagey Khola, half-a-kilometre away from the spot.

“The car fell almost 300ft below the road. Two bodies were fished out of the Teesta and one person was found lying on the riverbank with injuries,” said Tshering Sherpa, the inspector in-charge of Rangpo police station.

Burna Das Rai, 25, was taken to the Rangpo primary health centre where he succumbed to the injuries.

“We can’t rule out the possibility of over speeding. But the actual reason would be known after the investigation is over,” Sherpa said.

The two other deceased persons are Sonam Ladhaki, 30, and Madan Rai, 30. All the victims were from Bagey Khola.

A source said they were returning from Rangpo after meeting a friend when the accident took place. Burna, who worked as a driver in a private firm, behind the wheel.
