Anurag, Vivan win crowns

Guwahati, Dec. 19: Anurag Buragohain and Vivan Victor Das of hosts North East Tennis Foundation won the under-12 and under-14 boys’ singles titles respectively in the 22nd All Assam junior ranking tennis tournament that concluded at the NETF courts here today.

Anurag eased past Arnab P. Das 6-1, 6-0 for the under-12 title but went down to Vivan in the under-14 final. Vivan won 7-6 (3), 6-3. Manash P. Kuli lifted the under-18 crown beating Vivan 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

On Tuesday, Janashree Saikia and Murchana Saharia had won the under-14 and under-18 girls’ singles titles respectively. In the veterans’ doubles, Rajib Dutta and Nabarun Saikia defeated Navroz Manwar and Binod Das 6-4, 6-4 for the above-35 category title while Amlan Das and Randip Baruah annexed the above-45 event title beating Nabarun Saikia and Ganta Gogoi 8-4 in a single setter final.

In the above-55 event played in league format, P.G. Agarwal and Dipak Das won the title. Nabarun Saikia also won the mixed doubles title partnering Ajanta Borgohain to defeat Shahnawaz Zafar and N. Zafar 8-5 in the final.

State agriculture and parliamentary affairs minister Nilamoni Sen Deka distributed the prizes in the presence of NETF chairman Ranjit Chaliha.

Athletics: The inter-club athletics championship of the Guwahati Sports Association will be held at Sports Authority of India complex in Newfield here from Saturday. The GSA has appealed to all the clubs to participate in the tournament.

Chess: A 16-member team from GTC Chess Foundation here is participating in the 37th All Assam Chess Championship that got under way at Nurul Amin Stadium, Nagaon from today.
