Two rail blockades in Golaghat

Golaghat, Dec. 19: Around 1,500 people staged a rail blockade at Sarupathar in the district this morning.

The Sarupathar Chambers of Commerce and several other organisations, including All Assam Studentsí Union, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, blocked the railway track for more than over five hours from 4am to protest against the non-fulfilment of their demands to halt long-distance trains at the station and a manned level crossing near Sarupathar College.

The sub-divisional official (civil), Debo Kumar Misra, arrived at the spot.

The protesters handed over a memorandum to Misra to forward it to NF Railway general manager.

After an assurance from Misra, the protesters called off the blockade.

In another incident, the All Assam Chutia Studentsí Association blocked the Jajhar Express at Furkating junction in the district for an hour today.

The association is seeking ST status for the community. The association called off the blockade and handed over a memorandum with 26 demands to circle official of Golaghat N.A. Ali who met the protesters.

Many trains were affected as they were detained at various places along the route because of the blockades.
