Suicide after rape taint

New Delhi, Dec. 18: The director of a Delhi-based NGO facing allegations of raping a 23-year-old girl from Manipur today committed suicide by jumping off his third-floor flat.

Police said Khurshid Anwar was “depressed” after he saw a video of the alleged victim campaigning against him on a networking site yesterday.

“We suspect he got depressed after he saw a video where the girl was seen campaigning against him. This morning too, he watched news on TV in which he was accused of the crime,” a senior police officer said.

Residents of north Delhi saw Anwar lying in a pool of blood and alerted the police. The NGO director was declared brought dead at the AIIMS trauma centre.

According to the police, the girl had gone to Anwar’s house along with nine of his employees for a party on September 12.

“The girl claimed she is friends with one of Anwar’s employees. They partied and consumed liquor. The girl started vomiting. Assuming she was unwell, Anwar and his employees advised her to stay the night in his flat. She complied and went to sleep,” a police officer said.

A day after, the girl, who works for another NGO in Delhi, told her friends that Anwar had assaulted her sexually. She went to Manipur after that.

On her return recently, the girl filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women, which forwarded a copy to the police commissioner. A rape case was registered against Anwar yesterday.

The police said they had found a three-page note in Anwar’s diary that says he has been targeted by employees of another NGO and implicated in the case. “The note says he was very upset with the way the girl was maligning him,” the officer said.
