If you were planning to visit Calcutta by train this weekend, reschedule your trip.
Train services on Howrah-Kharagpur and Kharagpur-Chakradharpur sections of South Eastern Railway (SER) will be short-terminated, re-scheduled and diverted on December 21 and 22 because of a rail traffic block to facilitate installation of three girders of a road overbridge near Bagnan station.
Although the actual work will be carried out for 12 hours post Saturday midnight till Sunday afternoon, train movements will be hit on both days because of preparatory measures that need to be taken.
“The installation process will be carried out in Howrah-Kharagpur section from 12.45am to 12.45pm on December 22. Around 500 staff and officers will be deployed at the site. Train services on all three lines — Up main, middle and Down main — will be suspended,” said Soumitro Majumdar, chief public relations officer, SER.
He added that the overbridge would help in streamlining road traffic and make train operations smooth.
Several trains like Chakradharpur-Adra-Howrah passenger from Chakradharpur and Bokaro Steel City-Adra-Howrah passenger will not ply on Saturday (see chart). The next day, Howrah-Purulia Rupashi Bangla Express, Howrah-Barbil Janshatabdi Express, Howrah-Tatanagar Steel Express and Howrah-Chakradharpur-Bokaro steel city passenger will remain cancelled.
At least 10 trains will be re-scheduled.
Howrah-Mumbai Gitanjali Express will be rescheduled by two hours on December 22. It will run without a pantry car. Moreover, six mail and express trains headed towards Howrah, Santragachi and Shalimar will be rescheduled from its originating stations on December 21.
Officials at Garden Reach, the SER headquarters in Calcutta, said six pairs of mail, express and passenger trains will be short-terminated at and beyond Kharagpur to prevent congestion on both days.
Nine mail and express trains originating from different cities will run via diverted routes, bypassing Kharagpur. The Hatia-Howrah Express will ply through Kotshila, Bokaro steel city, Rajabera, Chandrapura, Dhanbad and Asansol on Saturday.
Station manager of Tatanagar Awtar Singh said they were aware about the railway block.
“For cancelled trains, passengers will get back refunds. Efforts will be made to ensure that passengers are not inconvenienced,” he added.
