Guwahati, Dec. 16: Janashree Saikia and Annie Thaosen today made it to both the under-14 and under-18 girls’ singles semi-finals in the 22nd All-Assam Junior Ranking Tennis Championship under way at the North East Tennis Foundation courts here.
In the short-setter under-14 round of eight matches, Janashree blanked out Heidi Bodosa 4-0, 4-0 while Annie beat Adrita Saikia 4-2, 5-3. In the other two quarter-finals, Baishali B. Bora prevailed over Breshna Khan 4-1, 4-1 and Sanhita Vasava overcame a stiff challenge from Eva Raj Sah for a 4-5(4), 4-2, 4-1 win.
In under-18 quarter-finals, Janashree overcame Adrita Saikia 5-4 (1), 4-2 and Annie defeated Nimisha Patra 4-2, 4-3. Murchana Saharia blanked out Nistha Konwar 4-0, 4-0 and Eva Raj Sah routed Kritika Borpujari 4-0, 4-0 in the other two matches. In under-12 boys’ event, Anchit Gogoi, Neerav Jain, Ojas J. Hazarika, Adarsh Sinha, Aryan Narayan and Arnab P. Das advanced to the quarter-finals.
National meet: Priyana Kalita of Assam set up tomorrow’s under-18 singles final clash with Shruti Gupta of West Bengal in the all-India championship tennis tournament at Gymkhana Club in Calcutta. In the semi-finals today, Priyana beat local girl Yubrani Banerjee 6-4, 6-0. Another Assam boy, Ankit Kashyap, went down to Bengal boy Arghya Das in the under-18 singles semi-finals. The latter won 6-4, 6-2.
