Ranchi, Dec. 16: Jharkhand High Court today termed a PIL that challenged open auction of sand ghats in the state as frivolous and dismissed it.
A division bench of Chief Justice R. Banumathi and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh was hearing the petition filed by social activist Diwan Indranil Sinha.
Through the PIL, Sinha alleged that auction of sand ghats was illegal. He also alleged that sand mining contracts had been granted to persons, who were close to chief minister Hemant Soren, in violation of the norms.
Sand beds should have been auctioned with the consent of gram sabhas but government officials conveniently bypassed them while awarding mining rights to various firms, Sinha’s counsel Rajiv Kumar argued.
The high court, which heard the matter and reserved its order on December 6, dismissed the petition today.
