An Air India employee was among four persons detained by customs officers at Calcutta airport on Monday for smuggling more than 7kg gold.
D. Tirke, who works with the national carrier’s airport unit and has access to restricted zones, Abbas Ali, a passenger on his way to Dhaka from Dubai, and two others were allegedly trying to take 64 gold biscuits weighing 7.2kg out of the airport. “Ali had handed over the biscuits to Tirke in the transit area and he came out of the terminal building to hand the consignment to two others,” said a customs officer.
Sleuths in plainclothes caught Tirke handing over the gold biscuits, said sources.
Customs officers seized gold jewellery and bars weighing 1.5kg from four passengers from Bangkok at Calcutta airport on Monday morning. Sources said the gold was seized because the passengers had not paid import duty.
