Gang flees as cops duck

A gang fired at police after being thwarted in its attempt to rob a non-banking finance company on the southern fringe early on Monday.

The burglars could run away as the cops from Bishnupur police station took cover after a bullet grazed the shoulder of a constable.

The police, however, said they had got hold of images of the burglars from the footage of the CCTV installed in Amtala office of India Infoline Finance Limited, 35km from the city. The company deals with mortgage financing, loan against securities, gold loans, margin funding and other finance products.

Circumstantial evidence suggests that the burglars entered the office, at the Amtala-Diamond Harbour Road crossing, after breaking open the rear door around 2.20am. The guard told the police that he was sleeping on a bench outside the closed main entrance.

“After entering the office, they broke the locks on the door of the locker room. They found a cupboard and an iron safe in the room. They broke open the cupboard but there were only documents inside. When they tried to break the iron safe, the burglar alarm attached to it went off,” said a police officer.

“The guard was awakened and he immediately called up the branch manager and Bishnupur police station for help. The police station alerted the cops on night patrol,” said Aloke Rajoria, the additional superintendent of police, South 24-Parganas.

The guard said the robbers panicked, probably after hearing him call the police, and left the building through the rear door. “While they were running through an alley, they saw cops and started firing. A constable was injured,” Rajoria said.

As the cops went into hiding, the robbers fled through another alley.
