IIT meet begins today

Guwahati, Dec. 15: The 49th Inter-Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Sports Meet will be held at IIT here from December 16 to 23 and will be followed by the 21st Inter-IIT Staff Sports Meet at the same venue from December 25 to 29.

Nearly 2,300 participants and sports officials from all the 16 IITs from across the country will take part in the event. Hosts IIT Guwahati will field a contingent of 145 students of which, 110 are boys and 35 girls.

The inaugural ceremony of the sports meet is scheduled for tomorrow where London Olympics medallist and world boxing champion M.C. Mary Kom will be present. Preceding the inaugural ceremony, she will also release her autobiography Unbreakable at the same venue.

The Inter-IIT Sports Meet includes athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, tennis, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, football, squash, hockey, water polo, weightlifting and body-building. An overall championship title will be awarded separately in the men and women’s categories to the IIT that scores the maximum cumulative points across all the disciplines.
