Hospital set to get new head

- Top docs eye IGIMS director’s post

The health department has expedited the process of recruiting a new Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) director as Dr Arun Kumar’s five-year term ended on December 12.

The department has already notified the selection committee, which would interview applicants on December 18. Development commissioner A.K. Chouhan has been made acting director till someone is chosen.

Chouhan will head the committee, while health department principal secretary Deepak Kumar, director-in-chief Dr Surendra Prasad, Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology director Harendra Kumar and Patna-based doctors S.N. Arya and S.P. Singh have been made members of the panel.

Arjun Kumar Singh, principal of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital, Bhagalpur, has been made a member.

Sources said 32 doctors had applied for the post of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) director. Senior IGIMS doctors who have applied for the post include head of gastro-enterology department Dr Amarendra Kumar, medical superintendent (additional charge) Dr Himanshu Shekar Rai, acting principal Dr Uday Kumar and dean Dr Mahendra Singh.

Prominent names among applicants include Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi, director Dr Tulsi Mahto, professor and unit head of Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak, Dr Pradeep Garg, AIIMS (New Delhi) professor of microbiology Dr Niranjan Nayak and director of neurology at Fortis Medical Research Institute Dr Shamsher Dwivedi.

Sources said former director Dr Arun Kumar, too, has applied. “Arun has not completed 65 years of age. According to AIIMS (Amendment) Act, the director’s age should not be over 65 and he can serve for only five years as a director. If Arun is reappointed by the state government, there is nothing wrong with it,” said an official.

The IGIMS Act has been formulated on the lines of the AIIMS act. Sources in the department said a person holding a postgraduate qualification in medicine, surgery or public health or its branches was eligible to apply for the post of director.

The applicant must have teaching or research experience of 10 years and 25 years’ experience of being a doctor and administrative experience.
