Calcutta: Fifth seed Samvel Ter-Sahakyan emerged champion at the SREI International Grandmasters Chess tournament, organised by the Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy, in association with Allsport Foundation, here at the Town Hall, on Saturday.
The Armenian GM finished with 7.5 points after the final round.
In a closely fought meet, there was a five-way tie for the top spot and Samvel edged out IM Mikhail Mozharov of Russia by half Bucholz tie-breaking points to seal the first prize of Rs 2 lakh. Tenth seed Mikhail predictably drew his last round game against GM Levan Pantsulaia of Georgia to secure his GM norm and the second prize of Rs 1.5 lakh.
Meanwhile, WGM Mary Ann Gomes and WGM Nisha Mohota clinched the top two positions among the women.
