Teen hangs after kin kill her boyfriend

Burdwan, Dec. 14: A 17-year-old girl in a Burdwan village hanged herself from the ceiling of her home yesterday after learning that her boyfriend had died of injuries he suffered when he was beaten up by one of her relatives.

Police said the Katwa teen had on December 6 eloped with a day labourer from the same village to her aunt’s house, 30km away, after the girl’s family objected to the relationship.

But the two were tracked down by the girl’s brother-in-law and his aides on Wednesday, the police said. The couple were dragged out from the house and taken to Pichkarir Dhal station on the Rampurhat-Howrah section of Eastern Railway.

The 22-year-old youth was beaten up with rods, stuffed into a jute bag and bundled into a goods train.

The girl was also thrashed by her brother-in-law, a small farmer in Katwa, after being brought home.

When the goods train reached Howrah station on Wednesday afternoon, Government Railway Police saw a “moving” jute bag. “We saw a jute bag moving in the goods train. We opened the bag and found a youth bleeding profusely. We immediately took him to Howrah General Hospital,” a railway police officer said.

The youth died of his injuries at the hospital yesterday. The girl killed herself hours later. A police officer in Katwa said the girl hanged herself after news of the death reached her yesterday morning.

Burdwan police chief S.M.H. Meerza said a search was on for the girl’s brother-in-law, who has been charged with attempt to murder.

The girl’s parents and her elder brother said they were not involved with the youth’s death and had lodged a police complaint against the brother-in-law, who is absconding.

“We are carrying out a probe to find out if others in the girl’s family had a role,” a police officer said in Katwa.
