Jorhat, Dec. 13: Police arrested three persons this morning on charges of robbery near railway tracks at Ataliagaon here.

The trio, along with four others, was fleeing after robbing a house of a businessman, Biren Bora, in Parijat Nagar next to Na-Ali.

The four associates fled by boarding the Tinsukia-bound Intercity Express, which was passing by when the gang was being chased by a police team.

A .38 pistol, a knife and several iron tools used by vehicle mechanics were recovered from the three youths.

They have been identified as Dulal Saikia of Barpathar in Golaghat district, Sanjib Bordoloi of Kakatigaon here and Subhash Dhar of Sariapani in Titabar subdivision of Jorhat district.

The police said the gang broke into Bora’s house around 3am. After tying his hands with a rope and blindfolding him, they asked his wife Niru to hand over valuables and cash to them.

As soon the gang left, Bora informed Jorhat police station. A police patrol team at Ataliagaon spotted the gang. The team chased the robbers and three were caught while the four managed to board the train.

Sources said the gang was involved in several cases of vehicle thefts and robbery in Upper Assam. Efforts were on to catch the other four members of the group.
