ENT meet in Dhanbad

Around 100 ENT (eye, nose and throat) specialists from across the country have assembled in Dhanbad to share their knowledge to boost healthcare in the Coal Belt, where people are particularly prone to air and noise pollution-induced diseases.

As part of the Jharkhand and Bihar AOICON (Association of Otolaryngologists of India Conference) 2013 — an annual conference of otolaryngologists — some senior doctors performed 14 operations live on Friday to educate participants about various aspects of surgery and treatment.

The three-day meet, which kicked off at Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Friday, witnessed two polyp nasal removal surgeries, three deviated nasal septum surgeries, three dacryocystorhinostomies and eight septoplasty surgeries.

ENT surgeon Ashok Gupta from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, and Amitabh Roy of Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences, Calcutta, led the team of specialists to perform these critical operations at the ENT department of PMCH.

Choudhary said allergy and sinus caused by dust and fumes were the common problems for people of the region. Prolonged neglect of sinus and allergy could lead to sinus cancer and lung cancer, respectively. “One should be very careful about sinus and allergy,” said Choudhary.

Speaking to The Telegraph, head of the ENT department, PMCH, S.N. Mehta said, “Such conferences are beneficial for doctors. They can learn from the experience of others.”

The proceedings of Day 2 and Day 3 will be held at Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research on Saturday and Sunday. Several issues like noise-induced hearing loss, cleft lip management, common speech problem and their management will be discussed.
