Bus mows down woman

A 45-year-old woman, who used to unload goods from trucks at Ranchi’s Pandra market every morning, died in a hit-and-run incident near Janta Petrol Pump under Pandra outpost of Sukhdeonagar police station early on Friday.

Manju Devi, who originally belonged to Sisai in Gumla district but used to stay in a rented place at Banstola, 1km from the accident spot, was on her way to the market when a bus ran over her around 6.45am. Pandra market is around 2-3km away.

Though no one saw the bus hitting the labourer as there were very few people on the road, some passers-by said that they spotted the vehicle, which appeared to belong to a school, fleeing.

“We saw a woman lying in a pool of blood on the road. It was only after we rushed to the spot to check out what had happened, we realised that she had been hit by a vehicle. We looked up and saw a yellow-coloured bus driving away. It appeared to be a school bus. I think the last four digits of the registration number were 3879,” said an eyewitness.

Soon after the accident, local residents descended on the road and blocked NH-75 at Piska More.

The blockade was lifted around 10.30am after the police’s intervention. The body has been sent to RIMS for post-mortem examination.

Officer in charge of Sukhdeonagar police station Randhir Kumar Singh said an FIR had been registered and efforts were on to locate the bus. “Some people who were at the spot gave us the last four digits of the number of the bus that apparently hit the woman. After proper identification, the bus will be seized and action taken against the driver,” he said.

An officer from the Pandra outpost, who visited the spot around 7am soon after getting the news, said: “Like every morning, the woman was going to Pandra market to unload vegetables and other goods from trucks when she was hit by the bus. It appears that she came under the rear left wheel of the bus.”
