A company executive and her colleague were arrested for assaulting a policeman near the Gariahat crossing around 12.20am on Friday when they were stopped for reckless and drink driving.
The woman, a deputy manager of a share trading company, and the 27-year-old vice-president of the firm were produced in Alipore court and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. A medical test revealed that they were drunk.
“The man at the wheel hit an autorickshaw from behind on Syed Amir Ali Avenue while returning to their south Calcutta flats from a restaurant. Trouble began when policemen of Ballygunge outpost intercepted the car and told the man to come out and produce his driving licence,” said an officer of Gariahat police station.
“He could not even stand properly. His female companion, who was in the front seat, came out of the car and started hurling abuses at us. She was drunk too,” the officer added.
A senior officer at Lalbazar said: “The woman pulled a police officer by the collar of his jacket and threatened to teach him a lesson. The officer stood helpless because touching the young woman might attract false molestation charges against him. They were in a fix since no policewoman was present to tackle the situation.”
The police said the woman fell on the road after a while and passed out. The accused duo were then taken to a hospital for medical check-up.
On why no policewoman was called to assist the team, a senior police officer said: “We don’t have adequate number of policewomen in the force and none is given night duty at police stations.”
Given the changing lifestyle of young women, the authorities might do a rethink and put policewomen on night shift, he said.
