VC march to protest intrusion

Kalyani, Dec. 13: The vice-chancellor of Kalyani University today organised a silent march with students, teachers and non-teaching staff members to protest encroachment on the campus.

Carrying posters, VC Rattan Lal Hangloo and the others walked for 5km outside the campus. Around 2,000 students, 100 teachers and 350 non-teaching staff members participated in the march.

“Residents of neighbouring areas have constructed garages, cattle sheds and makeshift structures on the campus,” he said.

The vice-chancellor added that some residents had broken the boundary wall of the university at several places to take shortcuts through the campus. “We are reconstructing the broken portions of the wall. We have also dug trenches along the varsity side of the wall to prevent illegal entry. We request the people of the area to help us protect the campus,” Hangloo said.

A varsity official said trucks, auto-rickshaws and rickshaws were also entering the compound through the breaches.
