Arindam Das skips practice

Calcutta: Bengal opener Arindam Das skipped nets on Thursday, as the hosts geared up for their Ranji Trophy match at the Eden against Uttar Pradesh.

Das is suffering from back spasms, but the team management is confident that he will be fit for the four-day match which begins on Saturday. Das is the only in-form batsman in the Bengal team apart from skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla.

His figures are a reflection of the form that the 32-year-old is in at present. With two centuries and a 50 in his last seven innings, Das has 411 runs as of now at an average of 58.71, which is streets ahead of the other batsmen.

Securing just one point from their previous match against Railways, Bengal do require at least three points against Uttar Pradesh if they are unable to force a win. Should there be a favourable result for Bengal, Das' presence is a must.

The practice session had a surprise visitor in Manoj Tiwary, who is recuperating from a knee surgery.

Meanwhile, Under-19 Bengal players Amir Ghani and Pritam Chakraborty, will be playing against Himachal Pradesh, at Kalyani, beginning from Thursday, since the India under-19 camp has been postponed.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) will be deciding on the fate of the players, who are accused of age-fudging, on December 19.
