Lady raped, kid flung out

Alipurduar Dec. 12: The wife of a Trinamul gram panchayat member has alleged that she was tortured and raped by a gang of 15 men in her father’s house in Falakata this morning.

The woman has also alleged that the men first beat up her mother, then they threw out her two-year-old daughter. They tied her in a room, yanked off her earrings which damaged her ears, and tore off clumps of her hair before raping her.

Till late evening, no arrests had been made.

The girl has suffered bruises as has the lady’s mother.

The alleged rape happened after a money tiff that the lady’s family had with a family of Santosh Sarkar, a well-off farmer who had employed the victim’s brother.

The woman was taken to Falakata rural hospital in the evening by police after a neighbour alerted them.

According to the police, the 32-year-old woman had come to her father’s house two days ago.

Her two-year-old daughter was with her.

Yesterday afternoon the lady along with her brother, father went to the house of Santosh Sarkar where the lady’s brother had been employed to work in the family’s farm.

The lady’s brother had claimed that he had not been paid Rs 4,000 as wages, which the trio went to demand.

The Sarkars allegedly refused to pay the lady’s brother and a scuffle ensued.

The Sarkars allegedly threatened the lady’s brother after which he fled.

A police source said last evening, some men in the Sarkar family went to the lady’s house and threatened to set their hut on fire.

Again, this morning, a bigger group led by the Sarkar brothers came to the lady’s home.

They thrashed the woman’s mother, and flung the child out of the compound and gang raped the woman.

The lady was in a state of shock when the police reached her home. She started yelling on seeing the cops.

The lady has identified four of her attackers as Gopal Sarkar, Santosh Sarkar, Rabi Sarkar and Bishnu Sarkar.

Her husband said this evening: “I have heard about the incident and I am yet to talk to my wife. We are going towards the hospital.”

Akash Magharia, the additional superintendent of police of Alipurduar, said: “We brought the lady to the police station and received her complaint. We have taken her to Falakata hospital for treatment. I and the SDPO of Alipurduar are going to the spot.”
