A construction worker, who was engaged in whitewashing at MGM Medical College and Hospital, fell down from the second floor after his safety belt gave in on Thursday afternoon.
Md Imtiyaz (32), who works for a private construction firm that has bagged the renovation contract of the Sakchi-based heal hub, sustained multiple injuries on his legs, back and spinal chord.
He was rushed to the hospital’s emergency ward, where he is undergoing treatment.
Superintendent of MGM Medical College and Hospital R.Y. Chowdhary confirmed the incident, saying that the nature of injuries could be ascertained only after the X-ray reports come in.
“Apparently, the worker was painting the outside of one of the buildings at the level of the second floor when his safety belt snapped. However, we have informed police, who have begun investigations to find out how the accident happened,” Chowdhary told The Telegraph.
He added that he had already asked the contractor, which has been roped in to renovate the hospital and give it a fresh coat of paint, to strengthen the safety apparatus.
“The painting job will resume only after the review,” he said, adding that work was stopped after the mishap.
The state health department has recently allocated Rs 5 crore for necessary renovation of the hospital.
