Calcutta: Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s fantastic performance under the bar helped Kingfisher East Bengal to a 0-0 draw against Salgaocar in an Airtel I-League match, at the Duler Stadium, in Mapusa, on Wednesday.
Although neither team could put the ball at the back of the net, there were enough chances created at either end as both the sides played entertaining football.
In the end, though, Gurpreet, who replaced Abhijit Mondal under the East Bengal bar, emerged the hero for the visitors as he saved a Matthew Foschini penalty in the 25th minute and then pulled off another stunning save to deny Scottish striker Darryl Duffy’s shot from close range in the second session.
In another match, two quick goals in injury time helped hosts Rangdajied United FC, come back from behind to beat Pune FC 3-2 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, in Shillong, on Wednesday.
Pune FC went ahead with a Mustapha Riga goal in the 23rd minute. His shot off an Arata Izumi pass hit the crosspiece, but went into the net, giving Rangdajied custodian Subrata Paul no chance. Gurjinder Singh doubled the lead for the visitors in the 34th minute.
Trailing by two goals, the Shillong team scripted a valiant fightback in the second half. Edmar Figueira got one back for Rangdajied United in the 60th minute.
And in what turned out to be a dramatic finish, Kim Yong (90+3 minute) equalised for the hosts and then substitute T. Lalrunpuia (90+4 minute) sealed the issue for them.
East Bengal, choosing to start with Edeh Chidi and James Moga upfront, failed to seize the chances that came their way. Salgaocar goalkeeper Karanjit Singh stood between them and the goal.
