Siliguri, Dec. 11: Jag Mohan took charge as the commissioner of the Siliguri metropolitan police today.
The IPS officer of the 1991 batch succeeded K. Jayaraman, who was removed from the post on November 30 following the arrest of G. Kiran Kumar, the then district magistrate of Malda, for his alleged involvement in the Rs 150-crore scam at the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority.
Jag Mohan, who took charge from the special inspector general of police (Jalpaiguri range), Jawed Shamim, told journalists that the investigations into the SJDA scam would continue.
Shamim had taken charge as the commissioner for an interim period after Jayaraman had been removed.
After Jayaraman’s removal, the Opposition had said they were apprehensive that the probe into the SJDA scam might suffer. At least two PILs have been filed in Calcutta High Court to hand over the investigations to the CBI.
“The investigation is in progress and would continue. Law will take its own course. That’s all I can say now,” Jag Mohan said after taking charge this afternoon. “My principal responsibility would be to meet the aspirations of Siliguri residents with focus on law and order, better traffic management and crime control.”
The officer had earlier served as the subdivisional police officer in Kalimpong and the superintendent of police, Cooch Behar.
Jag Mohan was an inspector general with the CID at Bhawani Bhawan in Calcutta before being shifted to Siliguri. Jag Mohan is the first officer of IG rank to join as a commissioner in Siliguri.
Both Jayaraman and Anand Kumar, the two former commissioners of Siliguri metropolitan police, formed in August 2012, were of DIG ranks .
“We welcome the new commissioner and expect that under his leadership the Siliguri metropolitan police would work more efficiently,” said Krishna Pal, secretary general of Darjeeling district Trinamul.
CPM leader and former minister Asok Bhattacharya today said: “We cannot comment on the efficiency of the new commissioner. We would appreciate if he takes forward the SJDA scam case and arrests all those involved.”
