Three rebels gunned down

Imphal, Dec. 11: A joint team of the army, Assam Rifles and police commandos gunned down three cadres of the Kuki National Front (Nehlun) in an encounter in Thoubal district this morning, police said.

The police said the team recovered one AK-series rifle, an M-16 rifle, a G-3 rifle and a carbine from the slain militants, while two other cadres of the same group escaped.

The police said the team began their operation in Nongpok Keithelmanbi, under Yairipok police station of Thoubal district two days ago on getting information of the presence of militants.

As the team was scanning the Nongpok Keithelmanbi area, it spotted the movement of some armed militants at a nearby hill early this morning.

The combined team ambushed the militants, who fired back. While the three were killed in the encounter, two others managed to escape in the thick forests, police said.

The police continued the search till late this afternoon to track down the militants. However, there was no report of any arrest.
