Teacher held for assaulting student

Sivasagar, Dec. 11: A 57-year-old teacher of a middle English school was arrested today for alleged sexual assault on a Class VI student at Gaurisagar, about 15km from here.

“The girl had gone to sit for her Hindi exams with two of her classmates. After they reached school, Hindi teacher Keshab Nath asked the two boys to call another girl from her home to sit for the exams,” the source said.

He said there are only four students who study Hindi and the school premises were almost deserted when the two boys left to bring the other girl from her home.

“The teacher then called the 11-year-old girl to the school office and allegedly tried to force himself on her. She somehow managed to escape from his clutches, ran out of the school and raised an alarm,” the source said.

He said the girl described the incident to people who had gathered outside the school, who then caught the teacher, beat him up and handed him over to police.

Nath is married with a son and a daughter, who is a graduate.

Parents of the victim later filed an FIR at the Gaurisagar police station.

Sivasagar additional superintendent of police Jayanta Sarathi Bora said a case has been registered under Sections 342 and 354 of IPC and Section 9 (f) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Sivasagar district elementary education officer Jiban Dutta said Nath has been suspended with immediate effect.
