Flyover option to wider NH-2

Residents of Govindpur in Dhanbad on Wednesday voiced their protest against the proposed expansion of an NH-2 stretch — from Barwaddah in the district till Panagarh in Bengal — into six lanes, claiming that the project would displace 350 families.

A public hearing to discuss the widening plan was held at the district collectorate under the chairmanship of deputy commissioner Prashant Kumar. ADM (supply) Ashok Kumar Singh and Sindri MLA Phulchand Mandal were among those present.

Industrialist and president of Govindpur Nagrik Samiti Sharad Dudani said: “We have raised our objection to land acquisition for the six-lane work because more than 350 families will be displaced. Also, the main market in Upper Bazar will have to be dismantled.”

At the meeting, Dudani suggested a 2.5km flyover from Amarpur to Fakirdi to get around the problem. “It will help avoid displacement. Vehicles coming from Delhi and heading towards Calcutta and vice versa won’t have to enter Govindpur,” he said.

To convince NHAI officials present at the meeting, Dudani pointed out that the flyover would cost Rs 250 crore, whereas compensation for land-losers could be much higher.

“The alternative will bring down the total project cost, which is currently pegged at Rs 1,665 crore,” he added.

ADM Singh said the administration would carry out an assessment of compensation and proposed flyover costs. “Accordingly, a report would be sent to the NHAI,” he added.
