Woman fights off molester

A 21-year-old BPO employee grabbed a man by his collar, hit him with her hand bag and dragged him to police after he allegedly molested her at the Esplanade crossing on Wednesday evening.

Witnesses corroborated the woman’s account, officers at Hare Street police station said.

The incident happened around 9.30pm when the woman, who works at a call centre in Sector V, alighted from a bus at the Esplanade crossing near the CTC bus terminus. She was about to board a bus to Kidderpore, where she stays, when 38-year-old Mohammed Akbar grabbed her from behind.

“The moment I got off the bus, I felt a man grabbing me. I turned back and hit him with my hand bag. He tried to bolt but I caught him by his collar. Soon, people gathered and we took him to the police. This is not the first time I was harassed on the streets,” the woman said.

She said the man was drunk. Police said Akbar could be cooling his heels in jail for five years if held guilty.

In another incident, a Class IX student was allegedly molested by a youth outside her home at Duttapukur in Barasat. Police said he even tried to throttle her.
