Diamond theft slur on merchant

A diamond merchant who was arrested in Mumbai on Friday on the charge of stealing diamonds worth Rs 2.25 crore in Calcutta on December 5, was flown down to the city on Wednesday on a transit remand. The diamonds have been recovered.

Jignesh Virji, 24, will be produced in court on Thursday.

Sandeep Badani of Hansal Diam Private Limited had brought the diamonds to the city. His friend Manish, a former employee of the company, had accompanied him.

“Manish might have told Virji about the diamonds,” said Pallab Kanti Ghosh, joint commissioner of police (crime). Manish, too, has been brought to the city, said the police

The police said the duo had stayed at a company flat at 5A Mahendra Road. Badani had hidden the diamonds under the mattress of his bed and Manish knew about it. The gems were stolen on December 5 when the duo had gone out for dinner.

On December 6, company director V.M.K. Kakaria lodged a police complaint. The case was later handed over to the detective department.
