Guwahati, Dec. 10: A 10-wicket loss to Goa in a home match yesterday has prompted the Assam Cricket Association to make a major reshuffle in the Ranji team, replacing three senior players with youngsters for the next match against Jammu and Kashmir in Jammu from Saturday.
The selectors’ axe fell on India Blue batsman Sibsankar Roy, wicketkeeper Kunal Saikia and off-spinner Arlen Konwar, who were replaced by batsmen Rishav Das, Sunzow Brahma and Parvez Aziz.
While Das and Aziz have been brought in as genuine openers in place of Pallav Das, who has been ruled out of the remaining two matches with a shoulder injury, the wicketkeeper’s slot remains devoid of a genuine stumper after Saikia’s dropping. Abhijit Singha Roy will have to step in behind the stumps.
Though Rajdeep Das was an option to replace Saikia, the former, too, was nursing an injury, leaving Wasiqur Rahman of the under-19 team the only other choice. However, the selectors decided not to change the winning combination in the colts’ team.
Sources in the ACA said the reshuffle has not gone down well with the team management, especially in the case of the wicketkeeper. Coach Subhrajit Saikia said: “We will have to manage with the 15 men given to us and let’s hope the combination clicks.”
Roy and Saikia have been dropped for not getting enough runs while, Konwar too, was not up to the mark in the last few matches.
The squad: Abu Nechim Ahmed (capt.), Abhijit Singha Roy (wk.), Dheeraj Jadhav, Tajinder Singh, Rishav Das, Parvez Aziz, Sunzow Brahma, Gokul Sharma, Syed Mohammad, Amit Sinha, Niraj Patel, Pritam Das, Arup Das, Prasanta Sonowal, Sujay Tarafdar.
