Auto union relents on fares

Guwahati, Dec. 10: The Guwahati Autorickshaw Co-ordination Committee today agreed to ply autorickshaws in the city, acceding to the fares determined by the state transport department.

The committee is an umbrella organisation of the West Guwahati Autorickshaw Association, East Guwahati Autorickshaw Society and Guwahati Autorickshaw Owners’ Association. The decision was taken at a general meeting of the association.

The transport department has fixed the rate at Rs 30 for the first 2km and then Rs 3 for every 200 metres.

The decision follows tough actions by the transport department to control errant autorickshaw drivers who refused to install fare meters in their vehicles.

“In a general meeting today, we decided to ply autorickshaws at the rate fixed by the transport department. But we will urge the government to increase the fare to minimum Rs 50 for the first 2km,” said Pabitra Kumar Baisha, general secretary of the association.

In a recent crackdown, the transport department seized 125 autorickshaws from different parts of the city.

Dilip Das, Kamrup (metro) DTO (enforcement), said the autorickshaws had been seized for not installing fare meters and plying without proper permits.
