Game, Roy steal the show

Calcutta: The La Martiniere for Boys called the shots on the first day of the Kolkata Invitational Sports — an inter-school athletic meet organised by the Debanjan Sen Foundation — as they finished with three gold medals.

While Christopher Gavin Game and Adidev Roy notched up the honours in the 1500m in under-19 and under-16 category respectively, Nikhil Patnaik triumphed in under-19 shot put for the hosts.

In other events of the day, Sonu Gupta of Julien Day School won the under-16 shot put boys’ event, Modern High School’s Pragya Bothra emerged the champion in under-19 girls’ high jump and Siya Manna of Julien Day was the best in the under-16 girls’ high jump event.

The 18-year-old Christopher, who hails from Jaigaon, a town near Bhutan border, clocked 05:05:00 seconds to bag his first-ever title in any athletics meet. Mobasher Alam of St James’ School came second, clocking 05:08.70, while Ankit Mukherjee of Army Public School was third with a timing of 05:14.90.

The 15-year-old Adidev, who is also the third ranked swimmer in India in the under-17 category, defended the title quite successfully as he ran the 1500m in 05:16.80 seconds.

Shaaz Abedin of St James’ School recorded a timing of 05:21.03 to come second, while Dwane Andrews of La Martiniere clocked 05:22.90 to be third.

Nikhil’s throw landed as far as 11.57m as the 17-year-old won the shot put in under-19 category. In under-16 category, Sonu’s throw landed as far as 10.88m.

Pragya jumped as high as 1.13m to win the title while Siya recorded a jump of 1.15m.
