Guwahati, Dec. 9: Odisha today walked away with three points by virtue of a first-innings lead against hosts Assam in their Vijay Merchant Trophy under-16 East Zone three-day match at Hailakandi.
Asked to follow on after bowling out the home side for 117 in 83.4 overs in the first innings in reply to Odisha’s first innings total of 353, Assam were 106 for two in 45 overs in the second innings.
Both sides then agreed to settle for a draw without playing the mandatory overs this afternoon.
Resuming the first innings at overnight 86 for six, the Assam boys played nearly 30 overs but could hardly add much to the board in the morning session.
Kalam Raja (13, 1x4) was the only one among the tailenders to score in double digits.
S. Sabat of Odisha returned with a haul of five for 28 and H. Rathor claimed two for 25.
The home side’s second innings also witnessed a sloppy opening, losing a couple of wickets with 33 runs on the board.
However, skipper Abhishek Thakuri (57, 7x4) and Deepak Singh (25, 2x4) remained unbeaten, sharing a partnership of 73 runs.
Subham Nayak and Rathor picked up a wicket each.
This was Assam’s second straight match from which they could tally only one point.
Earlier, they drew with hosts Tripura conceding a first innings lead to the opponents at Agartala.
Assam will next meet Jharkhand at Chaibasa from December 18 to 20.
