Field day for rural athletes

All rural roads in Dhanbad led to Tata Digwadih Stadium on Monday, where 211 boys and 195 girls from 22 schools in 39 villages under the lease area of Tata Steel (Jharia division) participated in an athletics meet.

The two-day sporty delight, organised by Tata Steel Rural Development Society, saw 33 track and field events on the opening day. Some 22 events are lined up for Tuesday.

The cradles that participated in the 100m, 200m, 1,500m, 3,000m races, 4x100m relay run, 800m medley relay, shot put and long jump on Monday included De Nobili School, Carmel School and DAV schools.

The day began with general manager of Jharia division of Tata Steel Sanjay Singh flagging off the ceremony. He handed over the torch to Sona Kumari and Nilam Kumari who won medals during the recently concluded national junior athletics meet.

A few students from Digwadih will participate in the Tata Steel Group Athletics Tournament scheduled in Jamshedpur. The selections will depend on their performance at this meet, said Singh.

Among dignitaries present were chief of Jamadoba group of Tata Steel (Jharia division) Manish Mishra, unit head of Tata Steel Rural Development Society Keshav Ranjan, regional president of Rashtriya Colliery Mazdoor Sangh S.S. Zama.
