Sub-inspector Sital Dey of New Market police station was suspended on Monday for allegedly assaulting a woman.
He has been slapped with charges under sections 509 (outrage of modesty through words and gestures), section 341 (wrongful confinement) and section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC.
Dey had allegedly assaulted the 24-year-old woman in front of Sealdah railway station on Sunday night.
The complainant, a singer at a bar in Entally, told the police that she was attacked at the taxi stand within the station complex around 11.30pm.
“Since the sub-inspector is from New Market police station, she lodged a complaint with us on Monday. We have registered a case against Dey, charging him with outrage of modesty through words and gestures, wrongful confinement and voluntarily causing hurt. Later, the case was shifted to Sealdah GRP because the incident occurred within the railway police’s jurisdiction,” an officer of New Market police station said.
The GRP will probe the criminal charges while Calcutta police have drawn up departmental proceedings against Dey.
A source said Dey knew the bar singer and apparently had an altercation with her. “He lost his cool and hit her.”
The incident happened a few hours after Dey finished duty at Assembly House, where he was posted from 12.30pm to 8.30pm.
