Balurghat, Dec. 8: A trade union leader of the Trinamul Congress was arrested here on Friday for allegedly plotting the murder of a party leader who survived the attack.

Rakesh Shil, 36, the convenor of the town committee of Inttuc here and the president of the Balurghat Municipal Bus Stand Motor Transport workers’ union run by the body, has been remanded in police custody for 10 days.

On November 12, Lagin Das, the Trinamul gram panchayat pradhan of Bhatpara, was shot at by some people at Chakvrigu in Balurghat.

Shil’s arrest has come as a shock to Das. “Rakesh’s arrest has come as a shock to me. I have full confidence in the police,” said Das.

The police have not disclosed the motive behind the murder attempt and are carrying out an investigation.
