Guwahati, Dec. 8: Assam were reduced to 86 for six in 54 overs in reply to Odisha’s first-innings total of 353 on the second day of the Vijay Merchant Trophy under-16 East Zone league match at Hailakandi today.
Electing to bat, Odisha were dismissed for 353 in 132.3 overs earlier today.
Odisha’s middle-order batsman Sandeep Patnaik missed a century by 10 runs when Akshay Narain found the block hole to bowl him out at 90 (12x4) while S. Samal remained unbeaten on 69 (7x4).
K. Biswal (49, 7x4), Dibyajyoti Pradhan (33, 5x4) and S. Sabat (24, 3x4) were the other notable scorers for the visitors.
Narain was the pick of the Assam bowlers, taking four for 80 and Riyan Parag scalped three for 64. Akash Sengupta also chipped in with two for 58.
Assam had a disastrous start to their first innings, losing two quick wickets for only eight runs on the board. Skipper Abhishek Thakuri (43, 6x4) and Deepak Singh (11, 1x4) looked set to stabilise the innings but Sabat took Singh’s wicket and later got Erick Roy out for a duck — leaving the hosts tottering at 38 for four in 17.5 overs.
Thakuri and Narain (22, 3x4) put up a tough fight for some time, sharing a fifth-wicket partnership of 45 runs, before both returned to the dressing room in quick succession towards the end of the day’s play.
Sabat claimed three for 25 and H. Rathor picked up two for 13.
