Calcutta, Dec. 8: Trinamul today took control of the Arambagh municipality in Hooghly following the defection of five councillors from the Left, which ran the civic body for 27 years.
The five Left councillors, including vice-chairman Dipak Sarkar, joined Trinamul at the party headquarters in Topsia in the presence of all-India general secretary Mukul Roy.
In the 18-member Arambagh civic board, the Left had 12 councillors and Trinamul six. With today’s defections, Trinamul has become the majority with 11 councillors.
CPM leaders said the defection would hurt its attempts to regain ground in Arambagh.
