Student expelled for assault

Silchar, Dec. 7: The executive council of Assam University, the top decision-making body of the Silchar-based university, at a meeting held today decided to expel a student accused of sexual assault.

Earlier in the day, a committee which was formed to investigate the case lodged by a student of social work department against her classmate, had submitted its report to the vice-chancellor. The report said the alleged “obscene acts fall under the definition of sexual assault”.

After today’s executive council’s decision, the accused will not be able to get admission in the university and other colleges under Assam University. The 19-year-old student had complained to the head of the department, Subhabrata Dutta, about an alleged sexual assault by one of her classmates on November 25. Dutta, who is also the dean of students’ welfare, allegedly tried to underplay the situation.

The report suggests that on that day, the accused had asked the girl to meet her teacher Tarun Bikash Sukai for submission of an observation report. While she rushed to meet Sukai and waited for him, the accused arrived on the balcony in front of Sukai’s chamber, embraced the girl and bit her on the right side of her neck. The accused has, however, denied the allegations.

In his statement before the committee, the accused pointed out that on the day of the incident he sat for an exam and after finishing the paper, he, along with another classmate, went to the computer centre around 2pm. However, the accused has confessed before the investigating committee that in the past he had showed some obscene pictures to the girl.

The clinical note and deposition of the attending physician confirmed a bite mark on the neck of the girl, the report suggested. According to the report, there is lack of conclusive evidence and it is very difficult to ascertain the involvement of the accused in this case of sexual assault.
