Senate meeting kicks off with stir

Ranchi, Dec. 7: Members of Akhil Jharkhand Chatra Sangh, a studentsí union affiliated to Ajsu, staged a protest near the Shaheed Chowk gate of Ranchi University today, delaying the scheduled senate meeting.

The protesters claimed that the varsity administration was indifferent to studentsí union elections. A few nominated senators, who were unhappy with the functioning of the varsity, also joined the agitation and squatted inside Maulana Azad Senate Hall.

Recently, the studentsí outfit had written to governor-cum-chancellor of varsities Syed Ahmed, urging him to cancel todayís meeting.

The meeting, however, finally started half an hour late, where a budget of Rs 759 crore was passed for the next fiscal (2014-15). Out of the 95 senate members, about 55 were present, including chairman-cum-vice chancellor of Ranchi University L.N. Bhagat, pro-vice chancellor M. Raziuddin and state HRD minister Geetashree Oraon. Those who had protested also joined the meeting.

Before the meeting started, Oraon said she wanted the studentsí union polls to be held at the earliest.

According to sources, the senate members argued on various issues. The last meeting of Ranchi University senate took place on August 12.
