Calcutta: The way McDowell Mohun Bagan danced their way to a victory on Friday, after five winless matches, it appeared as if their latest recruit Christopher Chizoba was the missing link in the puzzle that Karim Bencharifa had been trying hard to solve.
Or how else would you describe Bagan’s 4-0 drubbing of United SC? In their last match, Karim’s boys had surrendered to the lowly-place Meghalaya’s Rangdajied United SC.
Chizoba, a pretty surprising signing by Bagan from CFL non-entities Peerless SC, was under the scanner even before the match proper started. He had drawn attention in the pre-match practice session itself. As of Friday, the Nigerian has passed with flying colours.
He took all odds in his stride and scored a brace in Bagan’s victory in the Airtel I-League tie, at the Salt Lake Stadium.
Friday’s victory was quite significant for Bagan. Besides being the first win in six matches, it was also their first triumph over United SC in the I-League in three seasons.
Moreover, in a fine gesture, he dedicated his goals to the legendary Nelson Mandela. “Apart from my team, I also dedicate my goals to Nelson Mandela, who’s been an inspiration to Blacks all over the world,” the Man of the Match said.
