New DM for Malda

Calcutta, Dec. 6: The state government today replaced Godala Kiran Kumar as the district magistrate of Malda, days after he was sent on leave in connection with a funds misuse case.

The government issued a notification appointing Sharad Dwivedi, the chief executive officer of the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA), as the Malda DM.

Kiran Kumar had been arrested on November 30 for alleged involvement in paying contractors when he was the CEO of the SJDA for projects that were never completed.

Kiran Kumar was sent on 15 daysí leave immediately after he was granted bail on Sunday. Sources in Nabanna said he would be given his next posting the day he reports to the government.

The sources said that following todayís notification, Kiran Kumar is without any posting. Nabanna officials said he could be sent on compulsory waiting like K. Jayaraman, who was removed from the post of Siliguri police commissioner after he arrested Kiran Kumar.

The Election Commission of India has approved the name of Dwivedi, a 2006 batch IAS officer, as the Malda DM. The poll panelís permission had to be taken before issuing the notification as rolls revision are on in Malda.

The government had sent a list of three officers to the commission, which chose Dwivedi.

Kumar had been arrested after two days of interrogation by the detective wing of the Siliguri metropolitan police. He had been remanded in police custody for four days on November 30, but was granted bail the next day after the government told the court that his custody was no longer needed.
