BSF seizes gold worth Rs 20 lakh

Balurghat, Dec. 6: The BSF seized 700gm of gold suspected to have been smuggled out of Bangladesh through an unfenced border stretch in South Dinajpur from two persons travelling on a bus from Hili to Balurghat yesterday.

The gold worth more than Rs 20 lakh was in the form of six biscuits and recovered by the BSF on a tip-off.

Sources said a team from Sidhai border outpost of the BSF had raided the bus at Kamarpara and confiscated the gold. The BSF also seized two mobile phones and Rs 1,2500 from Sankar Saha, 45, and Tarun Ghosh, 42.

Sankar is a resident of Hili market, while Tarun is from Basanta village under Hili police station jurisdiction.

Kamarpara is 14km from here.

A BSF source said the gold had been brought to India from Bangladesh through the un-fenced border in Hili.

“Our team had got information that two persons were taking gold to someone who was probably waiting at the Balurghat bus stand. Based on the information, we apprehended the two,” said the BSF source.
