Sivasagar, Dec. 6: Traders in Sivasagar downed shutters today after some members of the organising committee of a bodybuilding competition allegedly took away potatoes and onions from some shops without payment.
The traders alleged that some people associated with the Mr Assam competition being held here from today came in groups this morning and forcibly took away sacks of potatoes and onions from some shops at Marwari Patty here.
“They lifted two sacks from each shop without paying for them,” a shop owner alleged.
Sources said the group of people took away sacks from four shops — Baba Ramdev Alu Bhandar, Dharam Saha, Lakshmi Bhandar and Rajinder Saha.
The traders later demonstrated outside the deputy commissioner’s office here. They also held a discussion with district officials and handed over a memorandum to the officials since deputy commissioner S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram was not present at the time.
Subsequently, talks were held among officials, traders and the organising committee members to settle the issue amicably.
The organising committee members said it was a case of misunderstanding. They, however, admitted the people alleged to be involved in the incident were their members.
Later, the traders took out a rally and marched towards the Sivasagar police station and filed an FIR against the committee members. A case has been registered against the accused under Section 384 of IPC.
The police said the FIR was filed against a group of members of the organising committee of the competition. “The people would be identified with help of the traders and the accused would be arrested soon,” a police officer said.
