Guwahati, Dec. 6: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union today demanded the immediate arrest of Karikho Kri, the legislator from Tezu-Sunpara constituency in Arunachal, for allegedly assaulting people at Tezu along with his supporters, on September 27.
Most of the victims are members of the All Mishmi Students’ Union, who had been protesting against Kri for illegally acquiring government land at Mahadevpur in Lohit district meant for a school. It is learnt the legislator was also unhappy after two candidates supported by him for the posts of general secretary and convener during the Mishmi union’s local body election had lost.
“Karikho Kri, his supporters and a few relatives, assaulted many innocent people on the night of September 27. They forcibly entered homes and damaged property. One victim was a pregnant woman, whose husband was not at home. We condemn such atrocities and want police to arrest Kri,” said Aman Tayang, president of the women’s wing of the Arunachal students’ union, during a news conference here today. The union claimed the police have not arrested the MLA even after the victims filed an FIR against Kri soon after the incident.
“We even submitted a memorandum of our demands before Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Nabam Tuki, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and K.K. Maheswari, director-general of Arunachal police through Kurung Kurney deputy commissioner Rajeev Takuk. Although other assailants were arrested, they were released on bail later. But no action has been taken against the legislator,” said Tayang.
Another victim, Kuling Chaitom was allegedly assaulted by Kri and his supporters because he went to the police station to report the matter and file a complaint.
“I along with a few of my friends had gone to the police station to file an FIR against the MLA and his relatives for assaulting a few members of the Mishmi union and their families. But when I was at the police station, Kri along with a few of his supporters reached there and assaulted me for reporting the matter to the police. Instead of protecting me, the police put me behind bars for two days. The police officers must have informed the MLA or else how would he know we were there?” said Chaitom, who is a member of the Mishmi union.
“We have been protesting against the MLA as he illegally acquired a huge plot of government land meant for a school at Mahadevpur. He wants to construct a building in the plot with the aim of renting it out. We were protesting peacefully and even took out a protest rally. This is why he targeted us repeatedly. We cannot tolerate such inhuman atrocities and he should be arrested,” he said.
