The body of a woman was found inside an abandoned port trust generator house opposite Customs House off Strand Road on Friday. A pedestrian spotted it around 9.30am. Her face was smashed, police said.
The woman has been identified as Ulfat Jahan, 30, a resident of Marcus Square in central Calcutta. She sustained multiple injuries on her face and head. The body did not bear any sign of sexual assault, the police said.
“More than one person is involved and it seems the victim knew her assailants,” said joint commissioner (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh.
The woman had married twice and was living with her first husband, the police said.
Sources in the homicide department said that the woman often used to leave home at odd hours and spent the night outside. So when she did not return home on Thursday night her family did not think of lodging a missing diary. First husband Mohammad Mona and the couple’s son have identified the body.
Two youths — Taslim Javed, 20, and Sarfaraz Alam, 27 — were arrested on Friday for snatching a woman’s gold chain on November 29. Police said three snatched gold chains were recovered from them.
