Court raps cops

Siliguri, Dec. 5: A Siliguri court today reprimanded Pradhannagar police for arresting a wrong person whose name matched with an accused in a drug case.

Subrata Hazra, the special judge of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court, ordered the release of Aloke Deb. “The court asked the inspector-in-charge of Pradhannagar police station to clarify why Aloke Deb had been arrested,” said Akhil Biswas, a lawyer.

Aloke Das, son of Ramhari Das and a resident of South Baghajatin Colony here, had been arrested with two of his friends in 2004 under the NDPS Act.

“Aloke Das got bail and was supposed to appear before the court at regular intervals. However, since 2008, he has not been appearing before the court. The NDPS court later instructed the police to arrest him. The police, however, picked up Aloke Deb, son of K.R. Deb from Baghajatin Colony, and produced him in the court today,” said the lawyer.
