Elections at 84 city colleges affiliated to Calcutta University (CU) will be held on January 16, 18 and 21.
CU colleges in Howrah will go to the polls on January 21, and those in Hooghly and South 24-Parganas on January 28. Elections on the six CU campuses will be held on January 18.
The poll dates were finalised at a meeting of officers from Calcutta, Howrah, Hooghly and South 24-Parganas police and senior officials of CU on Thursday.
Vice-chancellor Suranjan Das said colleges in Calcutta may choose any of the three dates but will have to inform the university by Monday.
The state government had issued two advisories on September 25 and November 18, urging universities to conduct elections at all colleges affiliated to them on a single day.
But given the large number of colleges — 140 — under CU, the police suggested phase-wise elections, instead, to ensure deployment of adequate forces.
VC Das said colleges would be able to conduct polls according to existing rules. For CU campuses, however, a new set of rules have been drawn up and will be placed before the syndicate for approval.
