Six held for planting explosives

Goalpara, Dec. 3: Six persons were today arrested for planting bombs on a railway track on the eve of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council election in Goalpara district last month.

Sources said the accused — Abbas Ali, Mafis Ali, Surat Jamal, Abdul Mazid and Jon Ahmed — placed four IEDs on a railway track near Krishnai, 30km from here.

“The accused have confessed their involvement. We have got more clues and will arrest the others,” D. Ray, officer-in-charge of Goalpara police station, told this correspondent.

Some non-Rabha organisations had opposed the poll and taking advantage of the situation, some goons had allegedly burnt schools used as polling centres, vehicles and had attacked people.

The police also arrested Habil Khan, president of the Goalpara unit of Non-tribal Students’ Union, for his involvement in the violence at Moilapota, 3km from here, on April 29. Three persons died and 11 were injured in the violence that broke out following the recovery of a farmer’s body near a forest.
