Goalpara, Dec. 3: The final results of the deferred panchayat polls for 16 zila parishad councils in Goalpara district were declared today.
The Assam state election commission was unable to conduct the elections in the district in February because of violence.
The Congress and the AIUDF won seven seats each, followed by the Trinamul Congress and the AGP with one seat each.
The Congress won in Dhupdhara, Ranguli, Krishnai, Badahpur, Takimari, Ambari and Kuchdhowa while the AIUDF won in Rajmita, Dadan, Sunari, Suryagiri, Agia, Bhasanipara and Jaleswar. But the formation of Goalpara zila parishad will depend upon the support of the Trinamul and the AGP, since no party has won absolute majority, for which a party needs nine seats.
There is no possibility of the AIUDF supporting the Congress. “So, Trinamul and AGP will play a major role in forming the zila parishad,” a source said.
